Continuing to Look at Noteworthy Three Point Shooters

After trying to estimate three point shooting with a few relatively simple statistics and a normally distributed generalized linear model in my previous post, I wanted to take a look at some more interesting players in regards to their three point volume and profile. Recently, Darryl Blackport, creator of pbpstats, posted a NBA tracking data scraper to his GitHub for public use and consumption. As a fan of all things data, I wanted to utilize this tool to identify noteworthy three point shooters in the 2019-20 season.

First I took a look at shots classified as catch-and-shoot opportunities that were either  "open" (four to six feet of space) or "wide open" (over six feet of open space). These are the shots, next to layups and dunks, that NBA teams are constantly trying to create every time down the floor (with a few possible exceptions). The league, on the whole, is shooting about 37.5% on these attempts, yielding a robust 1.12 points per shot attempt. The following plot represents the percent of each player's three point attempts that fall under this classification and each shooters accuracy on those attempts:

I highlighted the players who have taken over 400 three point shots overall thus far to get an idea of how often high volume three point shooters are attempting these positive expected value shots. Unsurprisingly, the most prolific three point gunners in the league do not take many of these shots relative to their overall shot profiles. Players like James Harden, Trae Young, and Damien Lillard are the primary shot creators on their teams; when they are not creating shots for their teammates they are often shooting off the dribble. One interesting player to note is Duncan Robinson, who played at Division III Williams College before transferring to Michigan and spent much of last season on Miami's G-League team. Despite shooting 420 three pointers thus far, a shade over 60% of his shots have been open catch-and-shoot looks. This sort of efficient shot profile, coupled with his volume, is unparalleled this season. Some credit should be allocated to the primary creators on Miami (Jimmy Butler and Goran Dragic) but much of Miami's excellent offensive production this season should be attributed to both Robinson's willingness to let it fly from beyond the arc and his success when doing so.

After looking at the most efficient three point shot type, I pivoted and looked at pull-up three point shots, the most difficult shot type. As one could imagine, taking a shot off the dribble is much more difficult then shooting off of the catch, where a teammate is often doing much of the shot creation. The following visualization highlights the most frequent pull-up three point shooters:

Even if you do not pay much attention to the NBA, it should be no surprise that James Harden, Damian Lillard, and Trae Young have taken the most pull-up three point shots. But the difference between Harden and his next closest competitor (Lillard) is staggering. Given Harden has one of the largest differences between his actual and expected three point percentage based on my model, this phenomenon is not very surprising. Spencer Dinwiddie has taken on much of the offensive burden as Brooklyn has been without Kyrie Irving for much of the season. Devonte Graham has grabbed control of the Hornets offense, taking 499 three pointers with 322 being of the pull-up variety. Given he was a second round pick just two years ago and Charlotte just handed Terry Rozier a massive three year deal, this has been one of the most surprising developments of the season. Jayson Tatum has also taken on a much larger offensive burden with the departure of Irving from Boston and has shot an impressive 38.67% on 212 pull-up three pointers. Given his aptitude on defense and proficiency as a shooter, I think it would be fair to expect Tatum to continue to thrive as arguably the best player on an excellent Celtics squad that will be in contention to win the Eastern Conference come playoff time.

Estimating Three Point Shooting Talent in the NBA

As the NBA continues to downsize and teams covet versatile wing players who space the floor on offense and can be assets in creating stingy defensive systems, identifying players who can effectively shoot from beyond the three point arc has become imperative for NBA front offices and public analysts alike. 

The concept of regression and variance in small samples is often lost on the casual fan and those who broadcast NBA games. When watching a game, you might hear a broadcaster cite a player's three point percentage on the year and pontificate as if it is representative of his talent as a shooter. This is not the case. Take Jae Crowder's 2016-2017 season: he shot 39.8 percent from three while shooting 32.2 percent combined in his nine other seasons in the league, per basketball reference. At the conclusion of that 2016-2017 season, Crowder was considered to have one of the best contracts in the league and an encapsulation of the league's move towards favoring front-court marksmen. So how could a 32 percent three point shooter knock down almost 40 percent of his threes in a given season? I failed to mention that in 2016-2017 Jae Crowder shot 394 three point shots, which based on research done by Darryl Blackport (the purveyor of pbpstats) at Nylon Calculus, is a little more than half the amount of three pointers required before we can be confident in a player's three point percentage (which is 750 attempts). 

I sought develop a systematic method for estimating a player's shooting talent. The method is as follows: a created a multiple linear regression model with three point volume per minute, three point attempt rate, and free throw percentage as an input. My rationale was good three point shooters are going to take a lot of threes when they are on the court, they are going to provide a large proportion of their total shots, and they are going to be good free throw shooters (we often have a larger sample of free throws for players compared to that of three point shots). This was the basis for my expected three point percentage model. Then, to obtain my estimate of a player's shooting ability, I took a weighted average of a player's actual three point percentage and his expected three point shooting percentage, weighted by actual three point attempts and 750 three point attempts respectively. 

The following plot highlights some of the most prolific shooters based on their regressed expected percentage: 

The names highlighted should not be surprising for the most part. Gary Trent looks to have been a great find for Portland in the second round a couple of years ago as has Georges Niang when Utah picked him up from the G-League. Ben McLemore has had a nice NBA return in Houston. 

Next I looked at the most high-volume shooters on a per minute basis (at least 10 per 36 minutes) and looked at how they fared with their expected three point percentage: 

I was not too surprised to see that in general players who shoot a high volume of threes tend to under-perform their expected three point percentage. If a player is taking a lot of threes, it is reasonable to assume that player is taking a plethora of difficult shots. 

Basketball provides us with a bevy of statistics, thus there are an endless amount of methods for trying to estimate a players shooting ability. This is just my first stab at it. But as I talked about in the introduction, being able to identify the players who can most effectively stretch a defense is increasingly important. Teams are continuing to increase their three point attempt rate and league-wide offensive efficiency as a result. Being able to find players who may be better shooters than their raw three point percentage suggests, or conversely players who are shooting over their heads, will continue to be of the utmost importance to league executives. As fans and analyst, understanding this phenomenon will be essential in understanding how teams construct their rosters.
